Field FAQ

For technicians and field engineers.

Common questions about charging, gauge readings, and working with hydrocarbon refrigerants in the field.

Why are HCR pressures lower than the legacy refrigerant?

Hydrocarbon blends carry more cooling work per unit mass than HFCs, so an HCR system reaches equilibrium at a lower charge weight and a lower operating pressure. The lower pressures are correct for a retrofit system, not a low-charge indication.

Should I charge by weight or by sight glass?

Always charge by weight. Hydrocarbon blends behave differently than HFCs in a sight glass: the flash pattern looks different even at correct charge. The installation instructions specify the exact mass per system. Verify the charge by reading the suction pressure against the P/T reference for the expected evaporating temperature.

Do I need a different gauge set for HCR refrigerants?

No. Any standard refrigerant manifold gauge works with hydrocarbon refrigerants. The pressures fall in the same range as conventional refrigerants. Make sure the gauges and lineset are clean of any incompatible residue before charging: same prep as any refrigerant change-out.

How do I get the P/T reference data for a specific blend?

Printable manifold-reference cards and full saturation tables are included with every quote, and available on request to credentialed technicians and procurement teams. Contact us to request the data pack.

On a glide blend, is the dew-point or bubble-point curve the manifold reading?

For HCR 4141 and HCR 4242 (the two glide blends), the vapor dew-point curve is the suction-side manifold reference. The liquid bubble-point curve is the high-side liquid pressure. For most charge-checking, the dew curve is what you compare against your gauge reading. The full data pack includes both curves at fine increments.
